Since you navigate with arrow keys , know that there are 3rd party remote mice out there that use more easily controlled disk pads, joysticks and touch pads, all a little more direct. Still, having the standard remote mousing and page up/down functions sure beats not having them. The feature set as a portable projector is pretty strong, again, for the price, as you will note when taking our tour of the hardware, this Viewsonic is well endowed with inputs and connectors. Color Brightness - Like many non-home theater DLP-based projectors, the PJD7820HD loses about 50% of its brightness when switched to its most color-balanced mode . But if color balance is not critical or the room's ambient light demands higher image brightness, then turning Brilliant Color on may be a good choice. Lamp Life - Normal mode lamp life is 4,000 hours, but Eco mode stretches that time to 6,000 hours -- which is one of the longer lamp lives available for a 3,000-lumen projector. And since Eco mode only drops brightness by 18%, it is an excellent choice if room light permits. If room brightness allows it, add to the viewing experience by turning off Brilliant Color, which reduces highlight brightness and gives the image a more balanced appearance.
As a home projector, it would be considered a little more basic (lacking CFI for smooth motion – a rarity on under $1500 projectors – or a dynamic iris, neither considered features needed outside the home). Brightness uniformity - The dimmest corner of the PJD7820HD's image was significantly dimmer than its center, and brightness uniformity measured 67%. Normally we don’t calibrate most under $1000 projectors for home (we don’t calibrate business projectors, only measure them). CEC an HDMI feature should allow this projector to be controlled from other devices that are CEC equipped. The remote of the PJD7820HD does not have any obvious control buttons for other devices, but CEC can be turned on from the menus. Also of note, as a typical portable DLP projector there’s no filter to change out.
Fortunately I have several pair of DLP-Link glasses here, so used a pair of BenQ glasses, and some 3rd party ones. DLP-Link glasses are oft called “universal” glasses as they will work on any DLP-Link projector. One thing we like to comment on, and that’s whether you can change out the lamp on a projector when it is ceiling mounted. It can be a real pain to unmount the projector, and then have to remount and align it again. As expected, the Viewsonic lamp is behind a lamp cover accessible from the top of the projector, so no problem. Using the provided USB port, connecting to your computer the Viewsonic’s remote can take on basic remote mousing functions with the arrow keys.

This makes for a quick set-up for two different viewing situations without the hassle of changing settings manually. Lamp replacement is performed through the top of the projector, so lamp changes can be performed on ceiling-mounted projectors without dismounting the projector. Additionally, there is an RS-232 connector for serial connections.
Switch to one of the User modes, choose ViewMatch as the reference mode, and switch Brilliant Color "off" in the Picture menu. While brightness is reduced by about 50%, you will find that flesh tones are more realistic than with Brilliant Color turned on. My home theater is a windowless, totally dark room with dark walls, floors, ceilings and furniture. The PJD7820HD features 1920x1080 native resolution for a total of 2,073,600 pixels. That is 4.3x more pixels than SVGA, 2.6x more than XGA or 2.0x more than WXGA. This price/performance combination is perfect for the home video category where Saturday afternoon movies and Sunday sports on a large screen are the order of the day even with ambient light in the room. Those 3,000 lumens will keep image washout to a minimum, and the resolution is high enough to count the blades of grass on the putting green close-ups. Native 1080p resolution is perfect for the sharpest and clearest picture available.
